Clown Intensive Workshop

Nov. 10-12, 2023

Ljubljana, SI

THE WORKSHOP

There are as many ways to approach clown as there are opinions on what clown, as a theatrical genre, is. This workshop derives its method from the work of Giovanni Fusetti, who linked the approach of Jacques Lecoq with practices of somatic psychology.

Lecoq contributed the concept of the red nose as the smallest mask. Accordingly, the workshop covers Leqoc principles of mask play: contact, articulation of movement, the levels of play, and breath.

The participants and pedagogues will also analyze the movement dynamics of each participant—their rhythm, gait, gestural habits, etc.—and explore the expressive themes inherent in each performer’s movement and physical presence. This creates an awareness that is then transformed (“transpersonalized”/“masked”), by way of amplification and play, into the clown state.

Finally, the group enters into solo and duo improvization, expanding the life of the clown and introducing the process of writing from the clown state.

THE TEACHERS

The workshop will be led by three members of Globus Hystericus: Alenka Marinič, Justin Durel and Anja Bezlova. In the company, we research and develop the genres of physical, street and clown theater as well as mask plays. In addition to creating theater performances, we also pay a lot of attention to pedagogical work and the development of our own pedagogical vision in the above-mentioned theater genres.

The workshop is part of the City of Clowns project, implemented by Zavod Bufeto in cooperation with the European Capital of Culture Go! 2025, within which events and various activities will take place until 2025.

A note from Zavod Bufeto, who are organzing this workshop:

“Clown language is the most universal in the world. Children understand it without words, regardless of their place of origin. Therefore, we combine this universal clown language with the languages of the two cities that will host the European Capital of Culture 2025 - Nove Gorice and Gorice. Clowns will interact with the audience, playing with words through the language of clown—jokes and tricks. The events will take place in public space and will enliven the hidden corners of both cities. The project will conclude with a production specially prepared for this occasion by young and already recognized creators.

If it is in their interest and in the interest of the Bufeto Institute, we will offer the participants of the workshop the possibility of further participation in the project.”

Red Nose Clown Intensive

July 22-30, 2023, at Floating Castle, Grad Snežnik (SI)

Principles of mask play and physical theatre

This workshop derives many of its methods from the pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq, who famously called the red nose, “the smallest mask in the world.” Accordingly, this workshop will cover Lecoq’s principles of mask play—contact, articulation of movement, levels of energy, and breath—all of which are tools that enable us to reach the clown performance state.

Movement analysis and the birth of the clown

The other major methodological influence is the work of Giovanni Fusetti, who pioneered the link between Lecoq's work and somatic psychology. The participants and pedagogues will analyze the movement dynamics of each participant—their rhythm, gait, gestural habits, etc.—and explore the expressive themes inherent in each performer’s movement and physical presence. The resulting awareness of the body in space, combined with the principles of mask play, ignites a transformation into the clown state.

Getting to know the clown: improvisation, voice, costume, and status

We then, through improvisation, deepen each clown character, allowing the performer a greater understanding of the clown character in a theatrical context. We discover each clown’s voice, costume, and relationship to other clowns.

Performing the clown: Skills and interventions in the public space

For the final part of the workshop, the group begins creating performances from the clown state. This may include solo and group numbers, music and dance bits, unusual and unique skills, disasters, triumphs, and flops. There will be the opportunity to perform these interventions as part of the festival.

Alenka Marinič (SI) in Justin Durel (US)

Alenka Marinič (SLO) and Justin Durel (USA) are independent theater artists who have created, performed in, and directed many performances throughout Europe, the US, and Canada. They have been teaching together since they finished their studies at the Helikos International School of Theatre Creation, under master teacher Giovanni Fusetti. Rooted in the pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq, their workshops explore theater and performance from a physical perspective, always emphasizing the interaction between technique and play. As teachers, they have taught workshops in Slovenia, the USA, Italy, and Germany.

The laws of movement determine the tools with which the performer can play. The performer’s use of these tools is called technique. The performer's enjoyment in using these tools is called play. Exploring breath, spatial awareness, human postures, gestures, and body language, the pedagogy of Durel and Marinič focuses on the emotions that arise when technique and play coincide.

This workshop will take place within the frame of the Floating Castle festival. There will be many other masterclasses happening in the same place at the same time. The space is limited to 12 participants. The price is 350€, which includes:

  • food (3 meals per day through the duration of the masterclass, 1 meal per day during the festival)

  • free camping (but bring your own tent!)

  • festival pass

You can find all the practical information and apply at the Floating Castle website: www.floatingcastle.si/en/floating/2023/masterclass-foo/

THE 20 MOVEMENTS OF JACQUES LECOQ

with
GIOVANNI FUSETTI

14 July → 17 July, 2022
Ljubljana, SI

Organized by Globus Hystericus and Zavod Bufeto

The 20 Movements (20M) are a series of movements devised by Jacques Lecoq and taught at his school as a form of practice for the actor. They contain some fundamental principles of movement in the theatrical space. Each of these movements is a “form” to be learnt, practiced, rehearsed, refined and performed.
As in martial arts or in any artistic discipline (music, dance, painting, sculpture… ), in the 20M we find the notion of “a set form” in which the artist applies some of the fundamental rules of this art. Similar to what in music is an “exercise de style” or a “divertimento,” each of the 20M is a piece of writing in which the actor practices and explores one, or more, specific techniques or principles.
Like scales for a musician, the 20M are a form of practice that the actor is never too good to abandon. It’s a movement training that can continue for the entire career of the actor-creator.

As referential forms, they are “impossible” in the sense that it is impossible to perform them perfectly. Therefore they can be practiced over and over, in more and more details, in the quest for the “justesse” of gestures.
They teach the humility of practice. You can always be corrected; therefore, you can always re-learn them and always re-teach them.

Each of them is a referential movement that allows the actor to understand the many expressive variations of that movement.

They are practiced in a state of neutrality. The body is constantly reminded to stay in a pre-character state. The actor’s persona disappears and THE movement appears. For this reason they are an excellent training for the neutral state.

Jaques Lecoq essentialised this notion with this statement “A verb has no opinion”.
While a verb has no option, the character does, and their opinion will appear in the particular, “personal”, way they engage with the action. The 20M allows an extremely accurate observation of this process.
The 20M are practiced by the actor alone, so they teach the individual about the necessity of taking responsibility for space, time and action, and for refining the poetic body.

Many are the benefits and pedagogic gifts of the 20M. Here are a few:

Rigor, persistence, the necessity of rehearsing, discipline, facing one’s own limits and physical habits, quest for neutrality, commitment to space, commitment to silence, commitment to movement, the humility of making mistakes and the courage of stating them, the responsibility of creating space and time, seeing the difference between everyday movements and transposed Movement, letting go of personal adjustments and comments, losing the opinions on movement, discovering the state of “economy of movement”, integrating feedback, showing the relationship between neutrality and character and between neutral movement and expressive treatment … and…

LARVAL MASK

A 5-DAY INTENSIVE WORKSHOP

Larval mask workshop, nov 2016, foto Matej Maček

KULTURNI VRT KATZENBERG (KAMNIK, SI)

7TH-11TH OF AUGUST 2017

THE MASKS

Larval masks are big and simple, with shapes that only begin to suggest an expression, while never fully defining the features of a human face. These masks force the performer to express solely by way of his or her gesture—no words, no sound, no face—thus bringing the art of acting back to the body and its physical presence on the stage. The masks have been created by Durel and Marinič.

THE WORKSHOP

We'll begin with an overview of Lecoq-based physical theatre principles. The students and pedagogues then move on to an exploration and analysis of each mask. After the principles of physical theatre and mask play are established, the student will learn the best ways to bring each individual mask to life in terms of rhythm, gesture, breath, and other physical theatre principles. The group then moves on to improvization and play, experiencing the life of these masks in various scenes.  The workshop will end in a public presentation.

AUGUST 15-20, KATZENBERG, KAMNIK, SI (WORKSHOP IS FULL)

In this course of this 6-day workshop, participants can:

  • Discover their clown

  • Gain a deeper awareness of their body and performance instincts

  • Develop at least one routine with their clown,

  • Perform at Kamfest during a presentation of clown numbers developed in the workshop

THE WORKSHOP

The workshop, which is an evolution of the 3-day clown workshop that Marinič and Durel have been developing over the past three years, will begin with an overview of Lecoq-based physical theatre principles. The participants and pedagogues then move on to an exploration and analysis of each participant’s body—their rhythm, gait, gestural habits, etc.  From analysis, the group then moves into play, allowing each performer to fully embody their clown.  At this point in the process, each clown’s comic, poetical, and completely unique state of being emerges.

The group then enters the second part of the process, creating performances from the clown state.  This includes (but is not limited to) solo and group numbers, music and dance bits, unusual and unique skills, disasters, triumphs, and flops.  Finally, some of the creations will be presented as part of a performance at Kamfest.
