THE WORKSHOP
There are as many ways to approach clown as there are opinions on what clown, as a theatrical genre, is. This workshop derives its method from the work of Giovanni Fusetti, who linked the approach of Jacques Lecoq with practices of somatic psychology.
Lecoq contributed the concept of the red nose as the smallest mask. Accordingly, the workshop covers principles of mask play: contact, articulation of movement, the levels of play, and breath.
The participants and pedagogues will analyze the movement dynamics of each participant—their rhythm, gait, gestural habits, etc.—and explore the expressive themes inherent in each performer’s movement and physical presence. This creates an awareness that is then transformed (“transpersonalized”/“masked”), by way of amplification and play, into the clown state.
Finally, the group enters into solo and duo improvization, expanding the life of the clown and introducing the process of creating stage material from play and the clown state.
THE TEACHERS
Alenka Marinič (SLO) and Justin Durel (USA) are independent theatre artists who have created, performed in, and directed many performances throughout Europe, the US, and Canada. They have been teaching together since 2013, when they finished their studies at the Helikos International School of Theatre Creation, under master teacher Giovanni Fusetti. Rooted in the pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq, their workshops explore theatre and performance from a physical perspective, always emphasizing the interaction between technique and play. As teachers, they have taught workshops in Slovenia, the US, Italy, Ireland, Germany, and Austria.
